When Ashley Cramer moved to Santa Cruz a year-and-a-half ago, she loved the town. But one thing was missing—a barre studio. As an instructor and barre aficionado, Ashley decided to forego treks over the hill to take barre classes and instead opened The Barre Studio in Capitola in October last year. From the spacious exercise room to the fashion forward clothing boutique, Ashley creatively designed every piece of the studio. She’s thrilled that her vision has come to life and to see the happy yet tired faces as clients leave the studio’s barre signature classes. To kick off the “Behind the Barre” series, here’s a q&a with our founder.

Where are you from?  Denver, Colorado.

What’s your favorite barre move?  Flat back glutes strengthening. I love that I shake every time, and it’s extremely effective for carving out a tight, lifted bootie.

When you’re not at barre, where can we find you?  Working on my laptop or drinking a big glass of red wine. Or doing both.

What’s your guilty pleasure?  Trader Joe’s dark chocolate peanut butter cups.

What’s the most played song on your iPod?  Probably something by Taylor Swift.

What talent do you have that we might not see at The Barre Studio?  Skiing. I started skiing as soon as I could walk and used to be a competitive freestyle skier.

What’s one of your favorite quotes?  “You can’t make everyone happy. You’re not a jar of Nutella.” —Unknown
